On Monday afternoon, a Hyundai Santro driven by Vasant M. Chavan, a retired Pro Vice-Chancellor of Shivaji University, Kolhapur, collided with four motorcycles before crashing into a parked vehicle. The devastating accident took place at Cyber Chowk, a crowded area in the district.
Chavan’s car, traveling at high speed from Rajarampuri Road, struck multiple bikes around 2:30 p.m. Eyewitnesses and CCTV footage revealed the impact was so severe that two victims were thrown several meters into the air, leading to fatal injuries. Chavan, who had just celebrated his 72nd birthday, also died in his vehicle after it collided with another stationary car.
The collision caused extensive damage, injuring at least six people and damaging several vehicles. Traffic barricades and a traffic signal were also impacted. The injured were quickly transported to C.T. Hospital and C.P.R. Hospital, where they are reported to be in serious condition.

Authorities suspect that Chavan, who was reportedly unwell, may have lost control of his vehicle due to a health issue. Police are currently questioning his relatives to determine if any underlying medical conditions contributed to the accident.
Cyber Chowk, a major intersection in Kolhapur, is situated near Rajaram College and Shivaji University, with several other educational institutions in the area. The accident has highlighted concerns about road safety in the area.
Vasant M. Chavan had a distinguished career, previously affiliated with IIM-Ahmedabad, serving as a college principal, and holding the position of Director at Bharatiya Vidyapeeth’s institutions in Kolhapur and Delhi. He was the Pro Vice-Chancellor of Shivaji University Kolhapur from April 2001 to March 2004.
