New Delhi – The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured 293 seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha election, surpassing the majority mark of 272. This victory will allow Narendra Modi to be sworn in as Prime Minister for a third consecutive term on Saturday, sources told M31Global News.

This afternoon, Narendra Modi was chosen as the leader of the NDA. He received widespread congratulations for his leadership and the significant progress India has made under his tenure. NDA partners praised his vision for a ‘Viksit Bharat’ and pledged their continued support towards this goal. They also commended his efforts in enhancing India’s global status.
Earlier today, NDA leaders gathered at Modi’s residence to review the election results and discuss the formation of the new government. Following this, a delegation of senior BJP figures and NDA partners was scheduled to meet President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan to claim the right to form the government.
This delegation included Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader Chandrababu Naidu and Janata Dal (United) leader Nitish Kumar. Their combined 28 seats are crucial for maintaining the NDA’s majority. Naidu’s TDP secured 16 Lok Sabha seats in Andhra Pradesh, while Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) won 12 seats in Bihar.
There were rumors that the opposition INDIA alliance, which won 232 seats (40 short of the majority), might approach Naidu and Nitish to form a government. To counter this, the BJP secured written letters of support from both leaders.
Aware of their importance, Narendra Modi mentioned the TDP and JD(U) leaders in his victory speech on Tuesday night at the BJP headquarters in Delhi. As early as Tuesday evening, when it became clear that the BJP couldn’t form the government alone, sources indicated that the Congress might court Naidu and Nitish to stake their claim.
Though neither leader has made their final decisions public, sources suggest they have various demands, including special status for their states and key ministerial positions.
The INDIA alliance, defying exit poll predictions, presented a strong challenge to the BJP, marking the first significant opposition since the Modi wave in 2014. Despite their efforts, they ended up with 232 seats, just 40 short of the required majority.
Congress, part of the INDIA alliance, had its best performance since 2009, winning 99 seats. This was a notable improvement from 2019’s 52 seats and 2014’s 44 seats.
On Tuesday, Narendra Modi met with President Murmu to resign, ahead of the dissolution of the current government on June 16. He was asked to continue as interim Prime Minister until the new government is formed.
This morning, Narendra Modi chaired the final cabinet meeting of his second term and downplayed concerns about the BJP’s performance, stating, “Winning and losing are part of politics… We have done good work for the last 10 years. We will continue doing so.”
Addressing a crowd at the BJP headquarters in Delhi, Narendra Modi expressed gratitude for the public’s support, saying, “I bow to the people for this affection and assure them we will continue the good work done in the last decade to keep fulfilling aspirations.”
