Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau arrived in Palm Beach, Florida, on Friday to meet with US President-elect Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate. The visit comes at a tense time, given that Trump has recently sent shockwaves by threatening import tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China. That could have huge economic consequences for Canada.

Unannounced Visit Raises Eyebrows

The visit of Trudeau was not publicized. As a result, it is no wonder many started speculating on its importance. It was actually the flight trackers that noticed first a jet broadcasting the prime minister’s callsign en route to Florida. As indicated by Flightradar, the plane landed at Palm Beach International Airport in the late afternoon. Accompanying him in this crucial visit was his public safety minister, Dominic LeBlanc.

While the CBC and other Canadian media were reporting that Trudeau was scheduled to dine with Trump, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) had decided not to comment on the visit. The silence has generated much speculation as to what may be discussed in private.

The Tariff Threat: A Serious Concern

Earlier in the week, Trump took to social media to announce his intentions to impose tariffs on Canada and Mexico. While some believe these threats might just be tough talk or a bargaining tactic for future trade negotiations, Trudeau isn’t taking them lightly. Speaking from Prince Edward Island before his trip, Trudeau said:
“Donald Trump, when he makes statements like that, he plans on carrying them out. There’s no question about it.”

This statement underscores that Trudeau understands the seriousness of Trump’s words. After all, Canada has more than three-quarters of its exports—worth CAD 592.7 billion, or USD 423 billion—to the United States. It is home to nearly two million jobs that directly depend on trade with the U.S. Significant tariffs could go a long way in straining this very important economic relationship.

Retaliation on the Horizon?

Reports indicate that Canada is already weighing its options to retaliate with tariffs if the US does follow through. A government source confided to AFP that such steps could counterbalance Trump’s belligerent position. But that may lead to further escalation and even a trade war that neither can afford.

Why This Meeting Matters

This meeting between Trudeau and Trump is of great importance. While the agenda remains unclear, it is certain that Trudeau will be advocating for maintaining strong trade ties. The economy of Canada is very much interlinked with its southern neighbor, and it is likely that Trudeau will be under pressure to ensure that no drastic measures are taken.

On a personal level, I think this meeting might achieve some progress. Face-to-face conversations often help ease tensions, and Trudeau might be able to present Canada’s side in a way that resonates with Trump. However, there’s also a chance that this could be a mere formality, especially if Trump is resolute about imposing tariffs.

What Does This Mean for Canadians?

If tariffs are placed in place, Canadians can find higher prices on their imported goods, possible losses within the country in certain employment opportunities as a result of export-oriented industries, and an economic ripple that falls throughout. A retaliatory position by Canada may have similar effects on American goods, bringing both economies to a pain point, where leaders would necessarily have to find ground.

In my opinion, Trudeau should focus on building alliances within the U.S. administration and Congress to counterbalance Trump’s unpredictable decisions. Economic partnerships are too important to gamble on political posturing.
