India and China have made major headway in terms of patrolling along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh. This has come after a period of prolonged engagement between the two nations and it is expected to aid in easing the tension in the area.
Without going into details, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri has confirmed the development, stating along the line of control, “An agreement on patrolling arrangements has been finalized which should help in the disengagement.” He also pointed out that the solution has arisen from the recent talks that took place to deal with the border concerns that have existed since the year 2020.

As the Indian officials have reported, the patrolling arrangement also incorporates the sensitive Depsang and Demchok regions, in which some tensions are observed. India and China relations have soured since the 2020 skirmishes in eastern Ladakh, in which 20 Indian soldiers were reported dead without any country confirming the number of Chinese soldiers that also died.
While the high-level discussions were taking place, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was set to leave for Kazan, Russia to attend the BRICS Summit, with no formal announcement made regarding his schedule. There is hope however that, on the margins of the meeting, PM Modi will have an interaction with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
In a gathering of leaders from BRICS countries at the BRICS Summit “Increasing Multilateralism for Equitable Development and Security of the World”, many topics of interest would be addressed by the attendees. During his trip, Modi is also expected to meet with other leaders privately. This BRICS group, which previously comprised only Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, has been enhanced by the incorporation of Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and UAE in the, what is now, BRICS Plus.
This agreement is regarded as a welcome development about the enduring border conflicts that India and China have had.
