In a move that has drawn sharp reactions across the political spectrum, President Joe Biden pardoned his son Hunter Biden, who was previously convicted of making false statements on a gun background check and illegally possessing a firearm. Hunter also had pled guilty to federal tax charges earlier this year.
The announcement, released Sunday through a White House statement, has reignited controversy over the justice system’s fairness and the intersection of personal and political decisions.
A Father’s Decision or a Political Statement?
President Biden defended the pardon, stating that his son was being unfairly targeted because of his family connection. “From the day I took office, I said I would not interfere with the Justice Department’s decision-making, and I kept my word even as I have watched my son being selectively, and unfairly, prosecuted,” the President said.
This pardon is particularly surprising in light of repeated White House denials that Biden would pardon or commute his son’s sentence. Hunter, a recovering addict, has been a constant target of Republican criticism, particularly from leading figures such as Donald Trump.
It had made clear that he believed the charges were politically motivated. No reasonable person who looks at the facts of Hunter’s cases can reach any other conclusion than that Hunter was singled out only because he is my son, Biden emphasised.

The Charges Against Hunter Biden
The media extensively covered the scandal regarding Hunter Biden, whom a court has found guilty on two counts, namely knowingly providing false information on the Firearms Purchase Receipt and possessing an unlawful firearm when heavily using drugs. Also last month, in September, he admitted to violating the US Federal Tax Laws by paying $1.4 million having spent alleged spending lavishly on drugs, women, and other luxurious expenditures.
Sentencing this Wednesday on the gun cases and December 16 on tax infractions, Hunter Biden’s case was far from a clear prognosis. That is, at least, until his father stepped in with his full might.
Hunter himself has admitted his mistakes. In a statement released Sunday, he said, “I have admitted and taken responsibility for my mistakes during the darkest days of my addiction. I will never take the compassion I have been given today for granted.”
A System Under Scrutiny
President Biden countered that Hunter’s prosecution did not align with how similar cases were prosecuted. He pointed out that few people were brought to trial on felony charges for making mistakes on their gun forms and that most people who forgot to pay their taxes but who later remedied the errors received non-criminal resolutions.
“It is plain that Hunter was treated differently. The charges in his cases were brought only after several of my political opponents in Congress instigated them to attack me and oppose my election,” Biden said. He also expressed concern that such efforts were not only to him politically but his son.
The Emotional Factor
This decision is not just political, it is deeply personal for Biden, who has already endured significant family tragedies, including the loss of his son Beau to brain cancer in 2015. Many speculate that his deep sense of family loyalty played a key role in this decision.
One memorable moment was at Thanksgiving when the Biden family took a trip to Nantucket. On one of his walks down the street, a supporter yelled at the President to pardon his son. By the weekend, the president had made up his mind.
“Here’s the truth: I believe in the justice system, but. raw politics has infected this process, and it led to a miscarriage of justice,” Biden said. “Once I made this decision, there was no sense in delaying it further.”
My Take on the Matter
This will be a different decision, depending on your political side. For some, it is the epitome of a father’s unconditional love and an appeal to fairness in the justice system. For others, it will look like an abuse of power or favoritism. What is certain is that this pardon will set a precedent-one that will be discussed and analyzed for years.
In my opinion, this pardon was perhaps inevitable in the situation; however, I feel it would have been a better case if Hunter had been subjected to full consequences and then earned forgiveness through his behavior. It could have told more about accountability and justice.
What Do You Think?
This decision raises a lot of questions about justice, politics, and personal responsibility. Do you think Biden made the right call? Was this an act of fairness or a misuse of power?
