Following the announcement of the Lok Sabha poll results, the Union cabinet, chaired by PM Modi, recommended the dissolution of the 17th Lok Sabha on June 5, just ahead of its term ending on June 16.
Sources cited by ANI revealed that the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the Janata Dal-United (JDU), seen as potential “kingmakers,” have given their approval. This paves the way for the formation of the NDA government, with PM Modi’s swearing-in ceremony likely on June 8. Both parties are expected to submit formal support letters to the BJP during an alliance meeting. In the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections, the BJP secured 240 seats. Despite not reaching a majority on its own, the NDA coalition has together secured 295 seats. The INDIA alliance secured 231 seats, presenting tough competition to the BJP-led NDA, contrary to exit poll predictions.
Compared to previous years, the BJP’s tally was lowerâ303 seats in 2019 and 282 in 2014. However, Congress showed significant growth, winning 99 seats, up from 52 in 2019 and 44 in 2014.
The BJP fell 32 seats short of the 272 majority mark in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. This is the first time since 2014 that the BJP did not secure a majority on its own.
