President Joe Biden mentioned Sullivan’s upcoming visit during a call to PM Modi on Wednesday, congratulating him on his re-election.
“President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. spoke today with Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India to congratulate him and the National Democratic Alliance on their historic victory in India’s general election,” the White House said, according to PTI.
Biden also praised the large voter turnout, with nearly 650 million Indians participating in the elections.
The two leaders emphasized their commitment to strengthening the US-India Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership and promoting a free, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.
“The two leaders also discussed National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan’s upcoming travel to New Delhi to engage the new government on shared US-India priorities, including the trusted, strategic technology partnership,” the White House added.
While the exact dates of Sullivan’s visit are not yet announced, it is expected to happen soon after Modi’s swearing-in ceremony.
Separately, Senator Ben Cardin, Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, congratulated the people of India on completing their elections, noting the significant turnout despite intense heatwaves.
“The people of India have again demonstrated their commitment to the democratic process, casting their votes despite this year’s intense heatwaves,” he said.
“The US-India partnership is vital for regional and global prosperity for many years to come. I look forward to strengthening this relationship, based on mutual respect, trust, and a commitment to democratic values,” he added.
“As political leaders form a new government, I reaffirm my support for the people of India in their efforts to enhance justice, transparent governance, and human rights,” Cardin stated.
John Chambers, Chairman Emeritus of Cisco, also congratulated Modi on his third term in a LinkedIn post.
“When I first met PM Modi, I was impressed by his humble yet bold vision for India. His Digital India initiative is one of the best I have seen, and recent major partnerships in defense, technology, and more highlight the country’s growth,” he said.
“As I mentioned at the Kennedy Center last June, I trust PM Modi and believe India will become the world’s top GDP, largely due to his efforts. I look forward to further strengthening the US-India partnership as the Chairman of the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum. Keep an eye on India – I am very optimistic about the country’s future under his leadership,” Chambers concluded.
